Chris, Anna and August Support League

Maplewood, MN

Story

We've created this page as a place for family and friends to share support for Anna, Chris and Augie. We'll regularly update this site based on what support is most needed, as well as with details on Chris's medical status. It's our hope that this will help give Anna space to focus her energy where it's most needed. Thank you sincerely to all who've reached out and offered support. Background: Chris, Anna and August have had their lives flipped as of Wednesday October 23rd. After having a cold run through the household for the past few weeks, Anna was prescribed antibiotics on Monday and Chris was prescribed a steroid nasal inhaler. On Wednesday morning, Chris was resting, and, when Anna went in to check on him, he was unresponsive. He was rushed to United Hospital. Lots of time trying to sort out what was going on in the ER and they started treating him as if he had meningitis before they could get a definitive test result. The following day, MRI and CAT scan results showed that a severe bacterial ear infection had infected the entire membrane around Chris's brain, as well as the part of his brain. Additional results also showed epidural abscesses in his spinal column. These epidural abscesses are a concern because they can cause bigger complications, including death. As of Friday, October 25th, Chris is in stable condition. He is still on a ventilator but the doctors are hoping that in the next couple of days they will be able to take him off of it. He also will be slowly weaned off of the sedation that he was put under to help him rest and heal. Anna is hoping that he'll become more lucid once some of the heavy sedation is gone. He can hear but is unable to communicate in any way. He had a minor operation to place a tube in his infected ear to help with fluid drainage — which will help his brain along in the healing process. The current treatment plan is multiple IV antibiotics and steroids. Also daily monitoring of the epidural abscesses to make sure they are not causing larger complications. Obviously, this is all extremely destabilizing, scary, and exhausting for Anna and August. Thankfully Chris is in good hands and hopefully not aware of any of this.
