Story
Ben’s journey began with a lower back pain about two weeks before we moved to Houston. On January 2nd, 2025 we decided Ben should go to the ER for an MRI since his pain level, lack of sleep and limping were worsening. The results revealed what was later diagnosed as Stage 4 EGFR exon 19 mutant adenocarcinoma of the right lung, metastatic to bilateral lung, intra-/extra thoracic lymph nodes, bone and brain. He has undergone endless amount of testing, a brain radio surgery, 20 rounds of radiation, began targeted in February, and chemotherapy on March 12th. Ben will take Pemetrexed and Carboplatin (2 intravenous chemotherapies) alongside his targeted therapy pill for 3 months and will remain on Carboplatin and the pill indefinitely or until he is in remission and becomes a candidate for a suitable clinical trial. We are grateful that Ben has a great team of doctors at MD Anderson who have given us hope and aim to treat his cancer aggressively, get him in remission and carry him through the next big breakthrough. The kiddos have been so resilient through this whole transition after our move to Houston on 12/21/2024 and Ben’s diagnosis on January 2nd. They continue to be playful loving kids and pray everyday for strength and Ben’s healing. God has had a plan for our family all along, thus the reason why he opened doors and brought us to Houston. His grace, love, and guidance has been and will be with us every step of the way. We are extremely grateful for the endless amount of prayers lifting our family through this battle. We will never forget all the support our family, friends, and neighbors have given us throughout this journey by either flying-in/driving to Houston when we need it, sending meals, flowers, cards, keeping us in your daily prayers, calling or texting to check in on us.
Special Notes
Many of you have offered to organize meal trains to further support our family. Ben and I for the most part prefer home cooked meals but the kids can be tricky at times, specially the boys; so gift cards might come in handy for days we have appointments and/or Ben’s side effects are more prevalent. We are forever grateful for your prayers, love, and generosity. With love, The Giles
