Support for Andrew

Council Bluffs, IA

Story

Andrew was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease a little over a year ago and last November began to have swelling and pain in his joints. At first, it was a manageable annoyance but it soon made daily life difficult and there were days that he was not able to even pick up his babies. At first, doctors thought he had developed another autoimmune disease - Rheumatoid Arthritis. He was placed on a long waitlist to see a specialist. After ongoing and increasing pain,an ER visit and several tests, doctors finally discovered that Andrew was actually having a rare reaction and complication to the Crohn’s disease infusion medication. The medication that was supposed to help the symptoms of Crohn’s ended up giving Andrew Drug-Induced Lupus. As a result of the Lupus symptoms and long term inflammation, Andrew developed Pericarditis and Pericardial Effusion with Cardiac Tamponade - which means that fluid was building around his heart, causing a lot of stress and pressure. He even lost his voice because the pressure and inflammation around his heart was pressing up against a nerve that controls the voice box. In the last 4 weeks, Andrew has been hospitalized 3 times - each time he has been released thinking he was on the mend. This week, he had a scary episode that Lisa says looked like a seizure (likely a syncope), and left him unconscious due to severely low blood pressure. He was taken by 2 ambulance rides overnight and ultimately had an emergency procedure to drain the fluid around his heart. He is currently stable and is being monitored. Once the Pericardial Effusion (the fluid around his heart) resolves, Andrew and his doctors will focus on a finding a different Crohn's treatment to reverse the Drug-Induced Lupus and get him back to normal- a potentially lengthy recovery. Andrew and his wife Lisa are two of the strongest, hardest working people I know. These medical issues have been an unexpected financial burden with a big impact on their little family. Andrew has been out of work for weeks and has a long recovery ahead. Lisa has exhausted paid time off to take care of him and the kids. The medical bills alone will be at least $10,000 after insurance. This does not include lost wages to cover things like rent, groceries, or other bills.
