Dana's Journey

Birmingham, AL

Story

After undergoing multiple rounds of IVF, I began having bright red blood in my stool. The doctor initially thought this was due to an anal fissure that was a side effect from the IVF drugs. He felt fairly certain it was the culprit but decided it was a good idea to perform a colonoscopy to rule anything else out. At the end of April I had a colonoscopy and a large golf ball sized mass was found in my sigmoid colon. Original pathology from the colonoscopy biopsies came back as benign (no signs of cancer). On May 16 I had 12 inches of my sigmoid resected. The surgeon said surgery went great and he saw no evidence of cancer outside of the colon. Because initial pathology was benign, he felt certain it wasn’t cancer or that if it was, it was early stages. Unfortunately when pathology came back, 2 out of 20 lymph nodes had tested positive for cancer as well as the mass. This means that I have stage 3 colon cancer and will require chemotherapy. Thankfully a friend of the family has a connection to a UAB GI oncologist who I will meet with on June 3. On June 4 I will have a CT to check for any evidence of cancer in other areas of my body. Please pray for peace and strength for me and my family as we take on my biggest challenge yet. This was quite a shock for us after what we were told post-op from the surgeon. And thank you to all my family, friends, and coworkers who have already been incredibly supportive of me on this journey. It has meant the world to me. I have felt so much love and support from the amazing people in my life and I feel more grateful than words can express. In the past I have found it difficult to accept help but I know that I can’t battle cancer alone. Since it would take too long to individually contact everyone personally, we will use this page to post any updates. (Currently updated to Stage IV colorectal cancer with liver metastasis). Philippians 4:6-7: Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Special Notes

Please do not wear strong smelling perfumes if visiting in person and do not visit if you are sick or have been around someone who has been sick.
