Story
Just a few weeks ago, Mike wasn’t feeling well and decided to visit urgent care to get checked out. What started as a simple concern quickly turned into something far more serious. Mike was admitted to the hospital due to fluid buildup in his lungs and abdomen. On January 30th, he received the devastating diagnosis of severe heart failure and was told he might need to be placed on the heart transplant list. He was transferred to Mayo Clinic, where the long process of testing and waiting began. During this time, doctors had to place a catheter into the right side of his heart so he could receive IV medications, as oral treatments weren’t working. After extensive testing, the medical team determined that while Mike is a strong candidate for a heart transplant, he doesn’t need one right now. Instead, they are giving his body more time to respond to oral medications. He has been placed on deferred status, meaning that if his condition worsens, they can act quickly to get him on the transplant list. Finally, some good news! On February 21st, after weeks of uncertainty, the Burkhart family received the news they had been praying for—Mike can finally come home! This is the best outcome they could have hoped for, but it also marks the beginning of an incredibly difficult road ahead. Mike is unable to work, unable to drive, and unable to do anything that puts strain on his heart. Heidi must continue working full-time on-site, and they still have Ellie and Andrew to care for. With medical bills piling up and half their household income gone, they are facing an overwhelming financial burden. They need our help. We are humbly asking for support in any way possible—meals, gift cards, or donations—to help ease the weight on their shoulders. Mike has to follow a strict Mediterranean and low-sodium diet, so meal deliveries or grocery gift cards would be a tremendous help. Every little bit counts, and any support you can offer would mean the world to them during this incredibly challenging time. If you can help, whether by providing a meal, sending a gift card, or simply sharing this message, please do. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for any kindness and generosity you can extend to the Burkhart family.
