Story
Becky and Josh's sweet daughter Charlie has been diagnosed with Myeloid Leukemia associated with Down Syndrome (ML-DS). It’s a rare but very treatable form of leukemia, and treatment outcomes are encouraging. That said, the road ahead will be intense. Charlie will go through 6 cycles of chemotherapy, each requiring a month-long hospital stay. If her counts allow, they’ll get a week at home in between cycles. The Sauers are anticipating 8-9+ months of treatment. This page was created to rally support for the Sauers during this challenging season — both in and out of the hospital. From meals to errands, encouragement to practical help, your care can make a huge difference. Let’s surround this sweet family with love and support every step of the way.
Special Notes
Both Josh and Becky are staying at the hospital, so we are trying to be mindful of how much "stuff" we bring. They have access to a shared fridge down the hall, so we are starting with one homemade meal a week. Please remember to make meals gluten free and limit any sort of food-prep that needs to be done (ie: food should be able to be easily heated in a microwave). If you could bring frozen water bottles with your meal, that will also help keep it cold in their cooler in their room. Ways to Help: 1. Gift Cards- Right now, we want to send them gift cards so they can get food, groceries, supplies, and money for gas/parking while they settle into their new rhythm. Digital Gift cards can be sent to josh@joshsauer.com. Restaurants and Grocery Stores nearby: Gia Pronto Kitchen (breakfast, salads, sandwiches and pizza), Greek Lady, HoneyGrow, Virasat Haveli (Indian and Pakistani cuisine), Goldie (vegan, Israeli-style falafel shop), Chipotle, Trader Joes, Giant, Wawa, Starbucks. 2. Drop-Offs- We anticipate needs changing day to day, so going to the hospital might involve running an errand, bringing food or other needed items, taking items from the hospital back to their house in Berwyn, or a visit if the Sauers are up for it and Charlie is well enough. 3. Encouraging words - Mail the Sauer's an encouraging note! We will be checking their mail and bringing cards for them to read during their stay. Text Brooke 215-353-2893 for their address or give notes to Betsey at church. The care calendar will be adjusted as in-person needs arise! We are going to focus on sending food and dropping in Sun-Wed and Becky's family will provide support for the second half of the week.
