Jason Mattey Liver Recipient

Story

Our Story. Our Fight. Our Miracle in Motion. We’ve been together for 26 years. Two and a half decades of life, love, laughter, and everything in between. We’ve built a life we’re proud of—a life filled with deep love, fur babies, family memories, and faith. But nothing… nothing could have prepared us for the last two years. This week is the hardest chapter of our lives. And yet, it may also become the most powerful. Jason—my husband, my best friend, my person—is facing a battle no one ever wants to fight. After nearly 23 years of diabetes, his liver has been quietly breaking down. He was diagnosed with cirrhosis, but we believed we had more time—five, maybe even ten years—before we’d need to face a transplant. But in September, everything changed. He began retaining fluid at a frightening rate. Week after week, we drove to Mercy Hospital for paracentesis—sometimes 15 to 20 pounds of fluid drained at a time. Still, he fought. Quietly. Bravely. As he always does. Then came the words no one is ever ready to hear: “It’s time.” We didn’t expect to need a miracle this soon. But God knew better—and so did Sam. Sam, our friend, has made the ultimate sacrifice. He has stepped forward to become a living liver donor for Jason. A real-life hero, giving us the one thing we needed most: hope. Ten people offered to get tested—that alone tells you everything you need to know about the man I married. Jason is the kind of soul people want to save because he has spent his life loving, giving, and protecting others. He’s my rock. My confidant. The best doggy daddy you’ve ever seen. A pappy, a father, a loyal son and son-in-law. The uncle everyone adores. And he is the man who has held me—physically and emotionally—more times than I can count. So today, I’m asking for something simple but sacred. Your prayers. Pray for Jason. For Sam. For the doctors, nurses, and surgical team. For healing. For a miracle. For full recovery. And yes—if you have one left—pray for me too. I believe there is always light, even in the darkest nights. I believe love can heal. I believe faith can move mountains. And I believe we are not alone in this. If you’ve ever been touched by Jason… if you believe in love, in strength, in miracles—please keep us close to your heart this week. And know this: when your day comes—when you need strength, hope, or someone to stand beside you—I’ll be there. I will return every prayer, every kind word, every ounce of love. Because that’s what love does. That’s what 26 years teaches you. And that’s who we are. Thank you for loving us through this. Please bless Jason. Please bless Sam. And may God bless you, too. 💕

Special Notes

Jason will have some initial dietary restrictions but overall in a few weeks can eat most things. He's a little picky sometimes but definitely needs protein.
