Sweet Pete Support Fleet

Minneapolis, MN

Story

Pete has been monitoring a mass in his liver for a few years, and doctors have finally stated that the time has come for him to address it surgically. On April 9, Pete will undergo an open surgery liver resectioning to remove a 6cm hepatocellular adenoma. This type of tumor has a high chance of turning into liver cancer and can also rupture and cause hemorrhaging in the abdomen, so it is critical that it be removed. As a consequence of the tumor, Pete will also need to have his gallbladder removed. The surgery will require an inpatient hospital stay for an estimated 3-5 days, followed by approximately 6-8 weeks of acute recovery time in which Pete will need some help from his community and loved ones. As one can imagine, having some of your liver removed makes you quite fatigued, and he will need as much support as possible to do tasks like cooking, cleaning, lifting, driving, etc. As most of you know, Pete works as an inpatient psychologist at a hospital and therefore will be unable to work for these 6 weeks while he is recovering, which adds a secondary layer of uncertainty for him, especially with very little leave. We are asking for assistance in financial support if you have it by way of Venmo, gift cards for groceries, or for hands on assisting with tasks. We have a calendar that we will update when needs arise, you can sign up for specific tasks in the calendar below. FOOD: If you are interested in helping him cook something, you can do so in Pete's apartment, or take the ingredients and craft something special! Pre-made meals and dropping off food is also totally okay and welcome, so long as you check in with Pete or confirm his diet restrictions prior. We will keep everyone updated as things come up. Thanks you so much for your support, whatever way it comes! **** So what's the plan so far? **** Pete will initially be staying at his parent's house in Bloomington for the first two weeks of recovery post surgery. His surgery is on April 9th, and it’s estimated he will be at his parents until around April 23rd when he would need to return to his second floor apartment in South Minneapolis. Visitors will be welcome at all stages of recovery, we just ask that you please take a covid test prior. During the first two weeks, donations would be very helpful via Venmo and Instacart. After returning to his apartment, these donations will be especially helpful so that Pete can order groceries for delivery that are healthy for his post-surgery diet, we have found this will be easier than a traditional meal train as his restrictions are quite specific due to the gallbladder removal.

Special Notes

HOW TO NAVIGATE THIS SITE: If you want to help with meals or you'd like to assist with something else, check the calendar of wants below! You can sign up for whatever makes sense in your schedule and what you can commit to providing. If you don't see something, it might show up later because we will know more about Pete's recovery needs as the time goes by. Because Pete won't be able to drive for at least 3 weeks or so, there may be requests that go out to pick up necessary items (e.g., prescriptions). Food deliveries are welcome any time, just check with Pete on if the timing works and please ensure the ingredients (both groceries and prepared meals) fulfill his post-surgery dietary needs (consistent with the post gallbladder surgery diet). Links to donate via Venmo and Instacart are on the right side of the page.
