Story
Life has a way of throwing unexpected challenges at us, and sometimes they come all at once. Right now, our dear friends Steve and Erin Schmuker are facing two major milestones: Steve is scheduled for surgery, and Erin is about to give birth to their child. It’s a lot to navigate, and there are understandably many emotions involved. But, through it all, they are determined to stay strong — and they’re not going through this alone. The Surgery: Steve has been diagnosed with a herniated disc between C6 and C7, which is pressing on his spinal cord and will require surgery. While this procedure is considered one of the least invasive types of spine surgery, there is still an element of uncertainty involved. This situation has understandably caused a mix of emotions for him—anxiety about the surgery itself, as well as guilt knowing that his recovery will take time, and he won’t be as present for Erin during the preparation for and birth of their child. Though Steve is focusing on staying positive and preparing for the surgery, it’s hard not to feel a little overwhelmed by the thought of being laid up when their spouse needs them the most. Still, Steve is committed to recovering quickly and being there as soon as he is able. The Upcoming Birth: In the midst of preparing for surgery, there’s also an incredible blessing on the horizon: the birth of their child. Together, they’ve been preparing for their baby’s arrival — setting up the nursery, packing for the hospital, and sharing in the joy and nervous excitement of adding to their family. While the surgery is a significant concern, the birth of their baby is something they are eagerly looking forward to. There’s so much love and excitement in their hearts for what’s coming, even as they balance this uncertainty with the hope of welcoming their little one. How We Can Help: Right now, Steve and Erin are going through a lot — and they need the support of their loved ones. We all know that life can be overwhelming at times, and this is one of those moments when being surrounded by people who care can make all the difference. If you can, please take a moment to offer your love and support. Whether it's sending words of encouragement, helping out with daily tasks, or just checking in, every bit of kindness will mean the world to Steve, Erin and their family. What They Need: Emotional Support: As Steve recovers from surgery, emotional support will be just as important as physical recovery. Offering comforting words, listening when he needs to talk, and reminding him that he is not alone will go a long way in helping them through this time. Practical Help: With both surgery and the baby coming soon, Steve and Erin could really use some practical assistance. Anything from preparing meals, running errands, or helping around the house would make a huge difference in relieving their stress and allowing them to focus on recovery and their growing family. Understanding: There will be moments when they need space, time, and understanding. It’s important to give them the grace to navigate this overwhelming period in their own way. Patience and empathy are key, and they will deeply appreciate any support that recognizes this. Celebrating New Life: While the surgery is a heavy weight to bear, the birth of their baby is a shining light in their journey. Sending your congratulations, love, and gifts for the baby will be a beautiful reminder of the joy they’re about to experience.
