Story
I can’t believe that I am about to write the following words. I have breast cancer. I have had multiple people ask me about doing a Carinbridge-like page and I’ve struggled, because I can’t believe that I’m writing this story about me. Around 34 weeks or so into pregnancy, I felt a lump. Ryan and I didn’t think too much of it, because they say when you’re pregnant with your 2nd, your body just knows what to do, so we just assumed it was my milk coming in. Me being the hypochondriac that I am still wanted to ask an OB about it. The 1st one agreed and said it felt just like a milk duct, but to have another OB who I was seeing at my next appointment check it out. So I did, and she asked if I wanted to get an ultrasound. I said I am all about being proactive, let’s do it.. Still never thought this would be the outcome. When I went to the radiologist he told me how common it was for people in their 3rd trimester to come in and get checked as so many people develop lumps and their breasts change, so still didn’t think too much of it, but wanted to get a biopsy to be sure. Well the biopsy came back cancerous and we found this information out on Tuesday, March 4th, less than 48 hours before my scheduled C-Section. I had plans for the day before my C-Section to soak up being with Nash and just enjoying the day. Instead it was a day spent finding a surgeon, oncologist, getting the ball rolling, and going in for more in-depth ultrasounds and mammograms. Which showed some spots on the lymph nodes under the armpit, more spots in the left breast (which is the one that showed cancer) and some spots on my right. (Fast forward, my right breast is Cancer Free!) Thursday, March 6th, we said was a “No Cancer Day” and a day to welcome our beautiful baby into the world. We were blessed with our little girl Zoey Lee Johnson, she is nothing but pure joy and a dream come true. We were in the hospital until Saturday, came home, and soaked up Sunday together before a week that I could never even begin to imagine. Tuesday, March 11th I met my oncologist Dr. Lassi and my surgeon Dr. Wildenberg, they are both incredibly wonderful, brilliant, empathetic, and trusting. I know I am in great hands! I had multiple biopsies, a full body CT & PET SCAN, Breast MRI, and a port put in. We are tired and it has been a rollercoaster. As mentioned above, we know now that the cancer is in my left breast and lymph node. We were so thankful to find out that the cancer did NOT spread to my right breast or anywhere else in the body! THANK GOD!!! I start chemo on Wednesday the 19th and am ready to start kicking this cancer in the butt and being 1 day and treatment closer to recovery! I cannot believe the love, prayers, and support that I have felt through this news.I feel the love and positivity, so please keep it coming!!! To my parents, we could not have done this week without you!! Thanks for all the comfort, love, and holding down the fort watching my babies so Ryan and I could drive all over the twin cities to get to my appointments. And to my Ryan, I knew I hit the jackpot meeting and marrying you, but the love, strength, grace, and companionship that you have shown me is just a whole other level, I love you so much!
Special Notes
Dear family and friends, Everyone’s way of showing support is different, and every single kind word, thought, prayer, and act of love means more than money could ever buy. If you feel inclined to support Abby and her family, here are some ways to help: 🍽️ Meals & Food Support There is a calendar below where you can sign up to bring a meal or have one delivered. Dinner twice a week (Monday & Thursday) The number of people listed is 3, but if you provide more, the family loves leftovers! Please no mushrooms in the meals and the oncologist recommends high protein meals. 💰 Monetary Donations Right now, we have Ryan’s Venmo linked. While we don’t yet know the full financial impact, we can only imagine how quickly expenses will add up. Donations will help with gas, medical bills, co-pays, food, and other essentials. With doing chemo, donations can help Abby get a wig and buy Zoey breast milk and formula since Abby will no longer be able to breastfeed. 🛍️ Wish Lists If you’d like to send a gift, here are a few wish list options: Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2WEXNDZTIRVS3?ref_=list_d_wl_lfu_nav_4 Target: https://www.target.com/gift-registry/gift-giver?registryId=7868ead0-9ac5-11ed-ad86-4b0a36ad0468&type=BABY 💌 Messages of Support This site is a great place to send messages of love and encouragement to Abby and her family. However, if you’d rather reach out in a different way, please feel free to do so however you feel most comfortable. 🏡 Visitors & Health Considerations We know how much everyone would love to give this family a big hug and spend time with them—and they would love that too! That said, with a newborn baby and Abby starting chemo, we ask for some extra care to help keep them as healthy as possible. Visiting Guidelines 🧼 Wash Hands Upon Arrival Please wash your hands or use sanitizer before holding Zoey or being near Abby. 🤧 Stay Home If You’re Sick (Even a Little Bit!) Even mild symptoms like a cough, sore throat, or sniffles can be risky. If you’ve been sick recently or around someone who has, please reschedule. 🌸 No Strong Perfumes, Fragrances, or Lotions Chemotherapy can make scents overwhelming and cause nausea. Please avoid wearing strong fragrances when visiting. 🍼 Limit Contact with Zoey’s Face & Hands We all love baby snuggles, but please avoid kissing Zoey’s face or hands to reduce germ exposure. ⏳ Keep Visits Short & Low-Stress Abby and Zoey need plenty of rest, so we kindly ask that visits be brief and low-key to help them conserve energy. 📲 Text Before Coming Over Some days are harder than others. Please send a quick text before stopping by to make sure it’s still a good time. =
