Janet’s chapter ending surgery.

Gansevoort, NY

Story

Hi all! So this is it! My last big surgery to end this chapter of my life known as Breast Cancer. Since having a bilateral mastectomy five years ago, I’ve had some complications. I have capsular contracture, which makes my left breast feel like a boulder. If you’ve hugged me in the last four years- there’s no doubt you’ve noticed! This has also caused some pain and skin discoloration. Implants are also not a permanent fixture, and in five years I would need to have them removed/replaced anyway. So after some research and consultations, I made a decision. On June 24, 2024 (5 days after the 5 year anniversary of my bilateral mastectomy), I’ll be going in for major surgery known as DIEP flap. My current breast implants will be removed, skin and fat will be removed from my stomach and will be used to create new breasts. I will have drains again, this time in my breasts and stomach. This surgery includes a five day hospital stay, and a 4-6 week recovery if everything goes to plan. And hopefully- that’s it minus a second minor surgery to correct anything aesthetic needed. Because of my past surgeries and appts, I’ve accumulated 4 days of sick time- total. Because of the extensive surgery, Mike is going to be home with me for 3 weeks too.
