Story
On November 7, 2024, doctors found and removed a tumor blocking 90% of Cohen's airway in his trachea. This discovery comes after 6 months of being told he had asthma and was unsuccessfully treated with inhalers/preventatives. On November 13, 2024, Cohen’s family found out that he had been diagnosed with Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma - A rare cancer in children making him only the 13th child in the world. A scary thought for a child who just turned 7 year old. Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma is a salivary gland cancer. Cohen will have to undergo major surgery, in which they will open his chest and remove the portion of his trachea affected by the cancer and fuse the remaining sections back together. Cohen will be in the intensive care unit intubated for approximately a week while the sections fuse together through a scar, a hospital stay of 2-3 weeks and have 6-8 weeks to recover from the surgery until his sternum fuses together and his trachea fully heals. He will have to have continuous bronchoscopes in which they have to take him to the operating room to ensure the proper healing of his trachea, and have continuous visits with his oncologist for the foreseeable future to ensure the cancer does not reappear.
