Story
We are creating this page on behalf of Jeff Blumberg, also known as Jeff Diamond, with the support of our community. Since 2017, Jeff has been facing significant mental health challenges that have led to the loss of his job, car, home, and all his belongings. He struggles with severe anxiety accompanied by psychosis, which is classified as a delusional disorder. This condition makes it difficult for him to distinguish between reality and imagination, as he holds firm beliefs in things that are not true. While he does not experience auditory or visual hallucinations, he does have persistent thoughts about an external force controlling him. During the initial phases of his mental health crisis, he frequently visited psychiatric wards before moving to an assisted living facility. Currently, Jeff is unable to live independently, and this situation is unlikely to change in the future. Recently, we had to relocate him to a different assisted living facility due to financial constraints. The new facility agreed to accept $2,000 of his monthly Social Security income of $2,007, leaving him with just $7 for personal expenses like medications, clothing, and a cell phone. For the past five years, we managed to cover his costs through the sale of his home, car, and personal belongings, but we are now down to his last few dollars. Unfortunately, he does not qualify for Medicaid, as his social security income is over the minimum required. Thankfully, he has Medicare, which assists with some of his medical expenses and medications, but it does not cover everything. We are aiming to raise $10,000 to help with his ongoing monthly costs. Jeff loves going out for lunch and would be thrilled if someone could take him to an ECU game. A simple visit with a bottle of Diet Coke or a vanilla milkshake from McDonald's would bring him joy. He would also appreciate a text or call from a friend. Any financial support would mean the world to us. Hello from Jana, Jeff's sister. Jeff is my older brother by 10 years, and we originally hail from the Chicago area. Back in the 70s, our family moved to Wallace, NC. When it came time to return to Illinois, Jeff decided to stay in Greenville, where he built a career as a radio DJ. Many of you might know him as Jeff Diamond, his on-air persona, but his real last name is Blumberg. Currently, I reside in the Seattle area, and seven years ago, I faced the heartbreaking challenge of watching my brother struggle with mental illness from afar. The distance made it incredibly tough to support him during this difficult time. For a couple of years, I felt overwhelmed trying to navigate the changes in his life alone. Simultaneously, our mother, who lived in Wilmington, was also facing health issues, and my visits to her allowed me to see Jeff. At that time, I was her legal guardian, never imagining I would also take on the role of guardian for my brother. Thankfully, I share that responsibility with Teri Barry, who lives in Greenville and has been a tremendous help to Jeff in ways I can’t be. I’m incredibly grateful to her! She regularly visits Jeff, accompanying him to his medical appointments, helping with shopping, and taking him out for lunch. Since his health has declined, she has been deeply engaged in his care. However, one thing we struggle with is providing the steady income Jeff needs to maintain his current living situation, along with the other items Teri mentioned. Despite his mental health struggles, Jeff is still the sociable guy you all know, always chatting with everyone around him. Any financial help you can offer would mean the world to us and help Jeff live comfortably. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact either of us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
