A Family in Need: Support for Dennis’s Fight Against Leukemia Life has a way of presenting challenges when we least expect them, and for the Gastelum family, this challenge arrived in the form of a devastating diagnosis: their vibrant 8-year-old son, Dennis, was diagnosed with leukemia. Dennis has always been full of energy, his laugh contagious and his curiosity boundless. Whether he’s playing tag, soccer, or coloring-he always did everything with love. Dennis brings joy to everyone around him, but when doctors told the Gastelum family that their bright, playful boy had leukemia, their world was turned upside down. This year, the Gastelums noticed that their son was not himself. He was feeling tired often, and was constantly complaining of body aches. The family went to many doctor's appointments to get some answers, but kept coming up empty. Finally, they received some clarity on his health issues, and now they understand the long journey of treatments, hospital stays, and rounds of chemotherapy that they will be facing. The family is trying to remain positive and hopeful for their brave boy. However, the road ahead is long and full of uncertainty, and the financial burden of Dennis's medical journey is overwhelming for his family. As of right now, doctors have said Dennis will be in the hospital for at least two weeks, returning regularly for treatments for months thereafter. They're also projecting him staying out of school for at least 8 months. While the Gastelums are staying strong for Dennis, the emotional and financial strain is going to be very hard on the family. Right now, there is only one working parent in this family, and even he is not offered PTO. This is where we can step in.
