Support for Brandon DuBois (Carolyn Davis's Son)

Rocky Point, NC

Story

Brandon was born with a defect called Pectus Excavatum. Many times, this condition can be left untreated or corrected during childhood. Neither was an option for him. As a child, he played football, wrestled, and ran track with no issues. Once he turned 24, he began feeling short of breath and chest pain. He collapsed during testing to have the corrective surgery done, CPR was done, and he was approved for the surgery. Finally, at the age of 26, he was able to undergo a procedure called the Nuss procedure. For the first time in his life, his heart rate was in the 80’s. Two titanium bars were anchored to four of his ribs, and in three more years, those bars will need to come out. Brandon is 6’ 3” and he is very thin. Many do not know that Marfan's also plays a role in his health, as well as moderate depression and an eating disorder. After some time, Brandon wanted to move to North Carolina to be with family, giving up a good-paying job with great benefits. After his surgery, he would say life is too short, and he was given a chance of a lifetime. He currently works as a subcontractor so if he doesn’t work, he doesn’t get paid, and they do not offer insurance. His employer has been going back and forth about providing insurance but has not offered it yet. Brandon was working a few weeks ago and twisted when he picked up a box. He felt a “pop” in his chest and called his mother. He was transported to a hospital two hours north of where he lives. Brandon was diagnosed with bilateral spontaneous pneumothoraxes. One in each upper lobe. He has been out of work and will be out of work for another couple of weeks. His heart rate is back in the mid 30's - low 40's and will probably stay there for the rest of his life. Brandon has always been a hard worker, so this has been very hard on him having to stay stationary. Any help is greatly appreciated and will go towards paying for his surgery and living expenses.
