Meal Train for Jessica’s Fam

Murfreesboro, TN

Story

In a moment that no parent should ever have to face, the Ulmer family is grappling with a diagnosis that has shattered their world. I, Isabel Wolfe, am reaching out to you on behalf of my dear friends Jessica and Brandon Ulmer during this incredibly difficult time as they fight for their precious son, Cordell. On January 20th, concerned about Cordell’s unusually bloated belly, Jessica and Brandon brought their little son to urgent care and were quickly referred to a Pediatric ER in Nashville, where everything changed. An ultrasound revealed a softball-sized mass on Cordell's liver, and a subsequent CT scan uncovered multiple masses on his liver and adrenal glands. Just like that, their world shifted; their precious baby was facing a battle against cancer. On January 21st, heartbreakingly, Cordell was admitted to the pediatric oncology unit, becoming their youngest patient. At just 9 months old, he is the beloved youngest son of Jessica and Brandon, who also cherish their two other boys, Liam (14) and Urijah (8). While they have navigated the typical challenges of parenthood, from fevers to broken bones, nothing could prepare them for the news that would shatter their hearts. By January 23rd, Cordell had endured fatiguing procedures, including a tissue and bone marrow biopsy, along with having a PICC line inserted for his upcoming treatments. In just a matter of 3 days, this sweet baby boy has been poked countless times, undergone surgery, and received numerous blood transfusions. The days turned into a blur of uncertainty as the medical team struggled to identify the cruel form of cancer invading his tiny body. On January 27th, in a desperate bid for answers, samples from Cordell's biopsy were sent to Cincinnati Children's Hospital, renowned for its groundbreaking cancer care. By January 30th, the verdict came in: Stage 4 Germ Cell Tumor (Extracranial Extragonadal), also known as Yolk Sac Carcinoma. This diagnosis is a devastating blow; it’s rare, aggressive, and signifies that the cancer has spread, leaving Cordell and his family to confront the reality of their situation. With this heart-wrenching diagnosis comes an urgent treatment plan that demands specialized care, constant medical attention, and full-time support from a parent. Cordell's road ahead is filled with intensive chemotherapy, frequent hospital visits, and the uncertainty of how he will respond to treatment over the next 6 to 9 months. The Ulmer family’s life has been turned upside down in an instant. While Cordell’s fighting spirit is undeniable, he needs us. The burden of cancer treatment can be overwhelming, impacting families emotionally, physically, and financially. According to The National Children’s Cancer Society, the average cost associated with childhood cancer can reach an astonishing $833,000. Any contribution, no matter how small, can create an incredible ripple effect of hope for this family in despair. Since Cordell’s hospitalization, Jessica has remained by her son’s side, sacrificing her job and much-needed income. The healthcare facility at TriStar Centennial is nearly an hour from their home, which means that Brandon is shouldering the impossible task of commuting back and forth, caring for Cordell, supporting Jessica, and tending to their two other sons and beloved pets at home. Your generosity will help the Ulmer family tackle medical bills, day-to-day living costs, travel expenses, and the emotional toll that accompanies such a devastating diagnosis. By alleviating this financial burden, we can allow them to concentrate on what matters most: Cordell’s strength and recovery. Thank you for being a part of Cordell's journey. Your support, love, and contributions mean the world to them during this darkest of times. We will continue to provide updates as we learn more about Cordell's progress. From the bottom of our hearts, we truly appreciate your help as the Ulmer family navigates this challenging road alongside their brave little warrior.
