Story
WELCOME! Bill R has lived well with a rare and aggressive cancer, (metastatic uveal melanoma) since it was first discovered in 2020. Now, he is near the end of his journey and has decided to spend his remaining time accepting care from "Hospice of the Sacred Heart" and focusing on family. Bill has given so much to the communities where he's lived and worked. Now, let's give back to him as he navigates this time, which we see as both challenging and sacred. We have created this calendar as a way to coordinate visits, identify needs, and help people find ways to show their support for Bill and Lisa. We invite you to join this community as a member of our care partner team. We will post requests here, as well as populate the calendar with scheduled appointments and visits. If you'd like to visit or do something for us, please contact Lisa at lkendall58@gmail.com to schedule it. *** Please be aware that Bill is struggling with extreme fatigue, and we are learning that shorter, high-quality visits are better than long ones. *** If you'd like you help but are unsure of how, maybe you would consider this compilation of the everyday as well as extra tasks we are (or will be) facing in the coming weeks. They include things that can be built into a visit or done from a distance. I have tried to organize ideas according to the "Five Love Languages" as defined by Dr. Gary Chapman, so you can consider what feels best for you: physical touch; verbal expressions; giving of gifts; quality time; and acts of service. PHYSICAL TOUCH - Massage, lotion, aromatherapy, Reiki - Hugs, holding hands - At some point, help with personal care will be where we most need help. If you are part of our core care team, it would be extremely helpful if you can assist with this during your time here. We will be posting video resources on how to help, and Hospice staff will also provide training for this when the time comes. VERBAL EXPRESSIONS - Send cards, texts, and photos - Share stories about you and Bill - Tell Bill if he has had an impact on your life (Ira Byock says we all have four things that need to be said before dying. They include, "I'm sorry," "I forgive you," "Please forgive me," and "I love you"). GIVING of GIFTS - This website has a place where you can donate to Instacart (we are getting our groceries this way now), Amazon, or to a VISA debit card. We are looking into a separate Venmo account to help with hiring extra help when it's needed. - Flowers QUALITY TIME - Help with thank you notes and other communication tasks - Share meaningful photos and stories - Stay in touch with texts and cards - Help with legacy projects - Watch a movie or listen to music (just sitting quietly together can be very meaningful) - Supporting family members with a listening ear and soft shoulder ACTS of SERVICE Any act of service can become quality time, even if brief, if you make a connection! - Laundry, groceries, water plants, load/unload dishwasher - Prepare, serve, and clean up meals - Get the mail - Take recycling and garbage to the curb - Shovel snow (our wonderful neighbor, Brian, and lawn guy, Ray, have been helping with this). - Spring yard clean-up - Help us optimize and organize subscriptions - Take our cars for a drive to keep batteries charged and help them run well One of the things we value most is prayer and healing thoughts, so please count that as a tangible gift you can offer us! Thank you for checking in, and please let us know what questions you have or if you'd like to help. Take care, Lisa K.
Special Notes
Please be aware that Bill's appetite has been affected, so comfort foods that are calorie-rich are welcome. This includes things like meatloaf with mashed potatoes & gravy, pot roast, hot soups, beef stroganoff, etc. Bill's taste seems to change day by day, so don't be afraid to message us ahead of a visit to check in. We don't have extra freezer space, so bringing just enough for a meal or a visit is optimal. (Please note: Lisa has serious food allergies that include spinach, buckwheat, and nuts).
