Story

During a routine yearly physical exam at Duke with my PCP a mass was discovered. My doctor ordered a mammogram and ultrasound and a “suspicious mass” was noted and three biopsies were taken. On October 2, 2023 I received a call from Duke indicating that I had invasive ductal cell carcinoma - stage 2, grade 3, ER -, PR -, HER2 - (For my oncology researcher friends out there - I am also BRCA 1 & BRCA 2 gene mutation negative). One week later I was speaking with my medical and surgical oncologists at Duke Women’s Cancer Center. As I have come to discover, triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is first treated by chemo followed by surgery. Based on my clinical findings I will follow the Keynote 522 regimen. On October 26, 2023, I began my first of 12 weekly cycles of Taxol/Carbo +Keytruda chemoimmunotherapy at Duke’s Woman’s Cancer Center (Macon Pond facility in Raleigh). And will then transition to dose dense AC (ddAC) + Keytruda across the span of the 3 months. This cycle will begin on Tuesday, February 6, 2024. Due to the tremendous outpouring of love, care and concern from extended family, friends, neighbors and colleagues, wanting to know “How can we help?” My friend and colleague Pam Barrett found the Give In Kind website. Pam, along with my amazing friend and neighbor Bobbie West encouraged me to set up this page so those who cared about me had a place to get updates and to see what help they could lend. While this is out of my comfort zone, I understood the value of having a central location to provide updates and information. Please know that my family and I am truly humbled by the army of people who have showed up to support us. There are no proper words to express the gratitude Peter, Nicole, Jessica and I feel. Thank you so very, very much. We love you all.
